Patient Empowerment Through Education (P.E.T.E.) – Hypertension

The Guyana Hypertension Program, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Georgetown, is dedicated to educating patients and their families about managing hypertension. We create educational materials that cover diet control, blood pressure guidelines, and the proper way to check blood pressure. The medical students at Campbell School of Osteopathic Medicine, NC, thoughtfully developed these materials, for which we are immensely grateful. Additionally, Dr. Mangru, representing our organization, generously donated 25 blood pressure machines to the Rotary Club of Georgetown to support this initiative. Dr. David Persaud represented the Rotary Club of Georgetown.
Educational materials include a trifold pamphlet and a full-page flyer. These materials are available free of charge and can be replicated from our Facebook page and our website or email request. The prevalence of hypertension in Guyana is significantly high, affecting 24.5% of men and 21.5% of women [1]. This high prevalence leads to numerous cardiovascular issues, strokes, and early renal failure. However, with proper education, diet, and exercise, many of these conditions are preventable. Our goal is to educate the general public on healthy lifestyle choices, prevention, and the importance of regular blood pressure screening.
